New Barn Poster Prints

It takes a certain kind of person to find beauty in an old barn. While many look at rustic old barns as junk and think they should be torn down, I look at them and see beauty and history of years gone by. Old weathered barns are being replaced by current aluminum pole barns. These buildings just don’t hold the charm of the antique barns. They just don’t hold the stories the others can; like where the wood is worn down because that is where Bessy the Cow scratched her back or where the horse chewed on the wooden post. To me the weathered wood shows character, almost like the wrinkles in an old face.

I love to photograph barns to keep them alive. That way, even if they are torn down, I still have a memory and they still have a life if only to hang in a frame on the wall. At least they will hang there proudly and with dignity!

Thank You Notes

With the dawn of the electronic age, don’t think that the old fashioned hand written thank you note is obsolete.  They are still very much in fashion and expected. Yes, thank you notes should still be hand written. A computer printed or fill in the blank thank you note is definitely in poor taste.

When should you write a thank you note? A thank you note should be written to show gratitude for gifts received after a birthday, wedding, wedding or bridal shower, baby shower. As well as for gifts received during an illness or in sympathy.

A thank you after being hosted in someone’s home for a couple nights and also for a dinner party in which you received a written invitation. For a dinner party in which you were verbally invited, a verbal thank you or phone call will suffice.

Business situations which call for a thank you note include a job interview and after being entertained by your boss.

Thank you notes should always be at least three lines and should be very personal. Don’t be generic unless you are thanking for a monetary gift in which is ok to say “thank you for your generous gift”. Don’t say anything negative and don’t talk about yourself. You are talking about the gift and the givers generosity in a thank you note.

Thank you notes should be written and mailed in a timely fashion. Bridal shower thank yous should be mailed within two weeks after the shower and wedding thank yous within 6-8 weeks after the wedding (depending on if you are going on a honeymoon). And if you forget and some time passes, it’s still ok. A late thank you note is better than no thank you note at all.

Hydrangea Shrubs and Flowers

The most common Hydrangea is the Hydrangea macrophylla which is the bigleaf or French Hydrangea.  This is the variety that has either pink or blue flower blossom depending on the pH of the soil in which they are grown. To achieve a blue flower blossom the hydrangea must be grown in acid soil with a pH of 5-5.5. To grow pink hydrangea flower blossoms, the soil must be alkaline or with a pH of 6 or more.

Hydrangea bushes are deciduous fast growing shrubs growing from 4 feet to 12 feet tall depending on the variety.
Hydrangeas don’t like to be hot and prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Their big leaves can suffer and wilt in full noon day sun. In general, they require a lot of water. In fact, the name Hydrangea is loosely translated to mean “water barrel”.

It’s hard not to love sunflowers! The official meaning of the sunflower is loyalty and longevity, although it is difficult to dismiss the happiness that they can spread. You can’t pass a field of yellow blooming sunflowers (or even a vase of them) and not stop to take a look and smile. Their warm radiance just spreads happiness.

Legend has it….

-that a sunflower planted in your yard will bring you good luck.

-that a sunflower cut at sunset will bring you good luck the next day.

-that if you want know the truth in any situation, sleep with a sunflower under your bed.

-to protect against small pox, wear sunflower seeds around your neck.

Sunflower History

Sunflower remains were found in North America as early as 3,000 B.C. American Indians grew sunflowers and had many uses for them. The first use was of course for food. They ate the seeds which are high in calcium, protein and other nutrients. They enjoyed them as snacks but also ground them and made bread from them.
Other uses included extracting the yellow dye from the flower petal and to extract the sunflower oil for ceremonial body painting.
The fibrous stalks were used to add fiber to their diets. They also were used as strong building materials for houses and huts.
The yellow blooming sunflowers were very important as their blooming schedule indicated the hunting calendar. They also were used in ritualistic ceremonies.

Kansas is the Sunflower State.

The tallest sunflower according to the 2004 Guiness Book of World Records was 25 feet 5.4 inches.

When a sunflower is in it’s bud stage, it tracks the movement of the sun across the horizon. Once the flower has bloomed it only faces east. No one is exactly sure why. It is thought to be a defensive response to avoid sunburn from the hot summer sun on it’s petals and seeds.

The tradition of giving flowers is one that is practiced by lovers, friends and families all over the world.

Flowers are an easy gift choice because they are appropriate for a wide variety of occasions such as: Birthday, Anniversary, Just Because, New Baby, Love & Romance, I’m Sorry, Get Well, Sympathy, and of course Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.

People also use flowers to decorate there homes and offices for special holidays such as: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Halloween.  Flowers are also used as a beautiful memorial in honour and remembrance of a loved one.
