Conservative Fish Parable
We’ve all heard the ‘fish’ parable: “If you give a man a fish, you’ve fed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you’ve fed him for a lifetime.” The parable is a lesson on self-sufficiency and learning. A person who is “fed for a day” will certainly be grateful, but then what are they to do tomorrow? Such generosity and compassion, if continued, only becomes dependency. It creates a burden on the compassionate and stifles the spirit of the dependent.
But, as the parable suggests, only a person who learns to support themselves can lead a fulfilling life. There is also a ‘cascade’ effect, where more self-sufficiency in a community breeds even more productivity and fulfillment for everyone. Which also greatly reduces the burdens when someone does need to be ‘fed for a day’.
The lessons of this parable translate directly to the concept of ‘distribution of wealth’ espoused by so many liberals today. I hope that relating wealth redistribution to the fish parable might help some to understand the futility and destructive reality of that idea.

Back-to-School!
Every student, young or old, needs to be organized. What better way to keep track of important dates that with a calendar! Specially designed 18-month calendar that starts when school starts! And runs thru January 2011! Sometimes low tech is the way to go.
A Brilliant Idea (Sleep Deprivation is Creative Crack)
I have had the Best. Idea. Ever. I’m going to launch a line of products which I am calling “tiny art” - they will be little works of art on postcards, business cards and those little profile cards thingies. They could serve as easily portable works, or as art for people who don’t have a lot of wall space (like me).
Nothing will convice me that this is not the best idea since sliced bread.
Nothing.

Pending Re-launch
So, I ticked the little box marked “make this store private” on the 20th of August. I took down all the old designs (except one, because I loved it too much to part with it) and started fresh. I intend to re-launch the store when I get to 50 designs and then add one design every day, forever. There is no particular logic behind this, but I guess the intention is to firstly not burn myself out creating a million designs in one go and then never having a creative idea ever again, and two to keep everything interesting.
That’s all for now, pax,
Lady Lovelace

Well it is officially “back to school” time now. Supplies have been bought, half days are over, homework has begun and notification has been given that too much talking is going on. It is a lot on the mom to remember all the deadlines for fund raisers, projects, tests, trips, etc. but teachers are the really special ones to do all they do each and every day. So kudos to the teachers out there and remember you are appreciated!
Here are some gift ideas for your teacher to let he or she know they are truly special. Customize with your teacher’s name and you will have a personalized gift that is unique.

Breckenridge, Colorado Bike Path
I have recently returned from an eleven day vacation in Frisco, Colorado. It was wonderful. I normally go skiing in Colorado in the winter, but we decided this summer to check out what it has to offer. It was non stop fun!
We stayed in Frisco because it is central to everything in Summit County and not that far from Vail and Beaver Creek.
Frisco has an amazing bike path system. We biked from Frisco to Keystone, Frisco to Breckenridge and home from Vail to Frisco (that was downhill). It was around 20 miles round trip each day. For us Midwesterners, it was exhausting.
This photograph was taken from the bike path on the way to Breckenridge. In the distance is the Breckenridge Mountainrange.
I offer it as a poster print, greeting card, postcard or mousepad through Lora Severson Photography. It makes a great birthday or holiday gift for a Colorado lover.
